Keynote: Success and Failure: Achievement and Its Many Meanings

Two main cognitive behavioral characteristics of Turkish students stand out among other PISA participants: Never fully ready for an exam, and have to be the ahead of others. High levels of stress and competitiveness may not be specific to Turkish students, however, the success rates are disappointingly low as well. Genetic and socioeconomic determinants of success and academic achievement are powerful. These constraints also allow utilization of modifiable factors related to social and emotional development for success, coping with stress and focusing and self control, both dimensions intertwined in social emotional development.

PISA çalışmalarının ülkemiz öğrencileri için ortaya koyduğu 2 özellik başarıyı net biçimde etkilemektedir: 1) “iyi hazırlansam bile kendimi bir türlü hazır hissedemiyorum”: kaygı ve stres düzeyi en yüksek olan birkaç ülkeden birisi, 2) “sınıfımın en iyilerinden birisi olmalıyım”: rekabetçiliği en yüksek birkaç ülkeden birisi. Üstelik, bu özellikleri taşıyan birçok başka ülke öğrencisinden farklı olarak başarısı oldukça düşük. Kaygı ve stres ile başkalarının önüne geçme “gerekliliği” bir araya gelince başarı iyice düşmekte, kazanmak öğrenme arzusunu sınırlamakta. Başarının belirleyicileri arasındaki genetik ve sosyoekonomik etkenlerin payının yüksekliğini düşündüğümüzde, başarının bir kaderin ötesine geçebilmesi açısından “modifiye edilebilir” bir etken olarak sosyal duygusal becerilerin anlamı daha artmaktadır. Stresi bir “sınav kaygısı” probleminin ötesinde ele alabilmek, stresi anlamaya ve kaybetme/kazanma ekseni dışında başarıya odaklanmaya imkan verecek düzenlemeler arasında stresle başa çıkmayı mümkün kılan etkenlerden odaklanma ve özdenetim kapasitesini geliştirmek okul ikliminin bir bileşeni olarak önceliklenmelidir.

Arka plan: Sosyal duygusal gelişim, akademik gelişimle oldukça bağlantılı olan öğrenci gelişiminin temel bir parçasıdır. Okullar, okul iklimini iyileştirmek için sosyal duygusal öğrenme ilkelerine dayanan stratejiler kullanabilir.

İçerik: Bu sunumda; okul iklimi güçlendirmek için uygulanabilecek olan SDG tabanlı bir program geliştirmenin ilkelerini dinleyeceksiniz. Program veliler, öğretmenler, yöneticiler ve öğrenciler dahil olmak üzere tüm paydaşları kapsamaktadır. Bizim yaklaşımımızda, çalışmanın başlangıcında ilişki kurma ve veri toplama süreçleri gelecek modüllerin gelişmesi için bir temel oluşturmaktadır. Okul müdürünün programa bağlılığı, SDG temelli okul iklimi geliştirme programının başarılı bir şekilde başlaması ve devam etmesi için bir önkoşuldur. Öğretmen ve danışmanların, öğrencilerin Yönetici İşlevler ve Kaygı ile Baş Etme becerilerini ve sosyal duygusal gelişimlerini güçlendirmek için kullanabileceği yöntemler örneklerle anlatılacaktır. Etkili bir liderlik için okul müdür ve müdür yardımcılarıyla çalışma yöntemleri ile velilerin sosyal duygusal ve akademik gelişime desteğini arttırma yöntemleri de okul iklimini güçlendirme programının temel kısımlarıdır. Okulda yürütülen araştırmalarla belirlenen konulardaki öğrenci, veli ve öğretmen atölyeleri, keyifli ve dostane bir öğrenme ortamı sağlayan “zirve” biçiminde büyük toplantılarla tamamlanır. Süpervizyon yöntemleriyle desteklenen okul rehberlik ve psikolojik danışmanlık servisi, programın ayrılmaz bir parçasıdır. Rehberlik öğretmenleri, programın başından itibaren yürütülmesine yardımcı olup, sonrasında çalışmayı devralarak programın sürdürülmesine liderlik edecektir. Özel okullarda ve devlet okullarında geniş bir yelpazede edindiğimiz çeşitli deneyimlerimizi paylaşacağız.

Öğrenmede Evrensel Tasarım (Universal Design for Learning - UDL), öğretim ortamlarında uzman öğrenciler olmayı teşvik eden ve başlıca öğrenme engelleriyle ilgilenen bir çerçevedir. Esnek olmayan, tek boyutlu müfredat herkese uymaz. Öğrenmenin önündeki engelleri artıran en önemli unsur, esnek olmayan bir öğretim programıdır. Üstün zekalı, yetenekli veya engelli öğrenciler gibi "sınırda olan"; öğrenciler de özellikle savunmasızdır.

Bununla birlikte, "ortalama"; olarak tanımlanan öğrenciler bile, bu zayıf müfredat tasarımı nedeniyle, öğrenme ihtiyaçlarını karşılayamayabilir.

Join us for dinner! This is a great opportunity to network with the other educators at the Curriculum Summit. There is no additional cost to attend.

Transportation will be provided to the restaurant (Tike) from the school after the consultative time at 18:30. Dinner and 2 drinks (non-alcoholic or alcoholic) will be provided. The meal will consist of 3 types of meze, salad, çiğ köfte, hot dish (meat balls-cheese pide), 4 types of kebap to choose from (vegetarian option available), a choice of dessert, and a fruit plate.

Learning objective. Learning about moderated discussion platforms and virtual meeting spaces for interactive learning.
Background. Teachers, as do many other professionals, report more effective learning through “social media” environments. Platforms that allow sharing information and experience and also provide moderation of the discussions by experts of the field have been effectively used in medical education, law and several areas of professional development. The learning/teaching tools that are utilized in complementing are available therefore case discussions, problem based learning and algorithm development can be part of the virtual learning environments that support the sharing/discussion platforms.
Content. We will be sharing our accumulated experience of developing educational programs for different groups of professionals, and how we’ve translated this experience into our educational “social media” efforts for parents and teachers. We will also present examples of using teaching tools in virtual learning environments that will allow teachers, principals and counselors participate at their convenience and join group learning experiences.

Alfabe, sesbirimsel bir buluştur. Alfabelerde sözcüklerin ses biçimleri, bir grafik işaret modeline dönüştürülerek harflerle “kodlanmıştır”. Harfler sözcüklerin sesbirlerinin yer ve sıralanışlarını, fonemlerin birbirleriyle bağlantılarını betimleyen göstergelerdir. Alfabetik yazım sisteminde okumak; yazılı grafik işaretlerin yeniden konuşulan sözcüklere çevrilmesi olarak tanımlanabilir. Okumaya hazırlık aşamasının en önemli adımı, konuşulan sözcüklerin sesbirimsel yapısının öğretimidir.
